Swing vs Bi-fold Driveway Gates

Choosing between swing and bi-fold gates? Both work well - the right choice depends on your driveway slope, available space, and budget.

This guide compares specs, pros and cons, and best use cases so you can decide.

For more detail, see Swing Driveway Gates and Cantilever Driveway Gates.

Comparison Table

Spec Swing Bi-fold
Width range 8 ft (single panel) to 20 ft (two panels) 8 ft to 30 ft
Clearance needed Clear space for gate to swing - usually 10-12 ft Little - folds to about 25% of opening
Best for slope Flat driveways, Gentle slopes Flat driveways, Tight spaces
Opener type Arm opener or underground opener Hydraulic or arm opener

For more detail, see Sliding Driveway Gates.

Pros and Cons

Swing

  • Pros: Flat or gentle slope. Under 16 ft wide. Clear space on one or both sides. Two panels with underground opener = cleanest look. No visible motor.
  • Cons: Not leaving enough room. A 12-ft gate needs 12 ft of empty space to swing. No plants. No cars. No mailbox. On a slope, the gate can hit the ground on the high side.

Bi-fold

  • Pros: Tight spaces. No room for swing. No room for sliding track. A 16-ft gate folds to 4 ft. Perfect for small lots and courtyards.
  • Cons: Wind. When partly open, the panels act like a sail. In windy areas (30+ mph), wind can slam the gate. That can damage the hinges.

Best Use Cases

Choose Swing when: Flat driveways, Gentle slopes. Your driveway is flat or gently sloped and you have enough swing space.

Choose Bi-fold when: Flat driveways, Tight spaces. Your driveway fits the clearance requirements.

Cantilever vs sliding: Cantilever gates float above the ground - no track. Ideal for gravel, uneven terrain, and steep slopes. Sliding gates use a track and work best on flat or gentle slopes.

Decision Guidance

  1. Measure your slope - Steep slopes favor cantilever. Flat driveways favor swing or sliding.
  2. Check side space - Sliding and cantilever need room beside the opening. Swing needs arc clearance.
  3. Consider maintenance - Track sliding gates can have track issues. Cantilever has no ground contact.
  4. Budget - Swing is often cheapest. Cantilever is typically higher for wide openings.
