Questions & Answers
What is a cane bolt used for?
What is a cane bolt used for?
It pins one gate leaf to the ground. On a double gate it fixes the inactive leaf so the active leaf can latch to it; on any gate it can hold the leaf open in the wind.
What comes with it?
What comes with it?
The 18 in bolt and two mounting brackets (2-7/8 in tall, 1-5/8 in wide). Fasteners are not listed as included.
How do I mount it?
How do I mount it?
Fix the two brackets to the gate frame, one above the other, so the rod slides vertically through both. Weld them on a steel gate or fasten them with screws or bolts sized for your frame, then drop the rod to mark where the ground receiver goes.
What does the rod drop into?
What does the rod drop into?
A drilled hole in concrete, a short pipe sleeve set in the ground, or a strike plate. Size the hole a little larger than the 1/2 in rod so it drops freely.
How long is the rod and is it long enough for my gate?
How long is the rod and is it long enough for my gate?
The rod is 18 in. Measure from where the lower bracket will sit to the ground; the bolt needs enough length to reach and engage the receiver.
Can I lock it?
Can I lock it?
This model has no locking feature. King Metals sells a mechanical locking cane bolt separately; it isn't this listing.
Is it rustproof?
Is it rustproof?
The steel rod has a cadmium coating for smooth operation. For long outdoor life, touch up the brackets and welds with paint after installation.
About
- 18 in rod, 1/2 in diameter
- Two brackets included
- Cadmium-coated steel
The King Metals 30-6018 is an 18 in cane bolt: a drop rod mounted near the bottom of a gate leaf that pins it to the ground. The rod is 1/2 in steel with a cadmium coating, and two mounting brackets come with it.
Fix one leaf of a double gate
Drop the rod into a hole or sleeve in the ground and that leaf stays put, so the other leaf can latch against it. It's the standard way to fix a double gate.
Hold a gate open
Add a second receiver where the gate stands open and the same bolt holds a single gate open in the wind.
