About
The King Metals 44-2005-ADJ is a pair of heavy steel barrel hinges you can adjust after the gate is hung. When a post settles or a gate sags, you re-level it with a wrench instead of re-welding.
Adjustable J-bolt
The male side is a 3/4 in threaded J-bolt, 5-3/4 in long, with two nuts: turn them to move the gate in or out.
Serviceable barrel
Each barrel carries 1 × 2 × 3/8 in weld pads, a bearing and a grease fitting for a smooth swing.
What's in the box
- Two complete hinges (one pair): two J-bolts with two nuts each, and two barrels with weld pads, bearings and grease fittings
What you'll still need
- Welding equipment to fix the barrel weld pads to the gate frame
- A way to mount the J-bolts to the post: a drilled hole through the post or a welded tab, sized for 3/4 in thread
- A post-to-gate gap of at least 2-3/4 in
- A grease gun, and primer and paint for the bare steel after welding
3/4 in or 5/8 in
King Metals also sells a lighter 5/8 in J-bolt adjustable barrel hinge pair (44-2003-ADJ). This listing is the 3/4 in, 600 lb 44-2005-ADJ.

Frequently asked questions
Is this one hinge or two?
Two. King Metals sells the 44-2005-ADJ by the pair: two complete hinges, enough for one gate leaf.
How much weight will it hold?
King Metals rates the 44-2005-ADJ at 600 lb capacity. Size hinges with margin for wind load and for anything that hangs on the gate, such as an operator arm.
How does the adjustment work?
The J-bolt is threaded 3/4 in and held by two nuts. Loosen one and tighten the other to move that hinge point in or out, which levels the gate or takes out sag without cutting welds.
How do I install it?
Weld the barrel side to the gate frame using its 1 × 2 in, 3/8 in thick weld pads, and mount the threaded J-bolt to the post with its two nuts, through a drilled hole or a welded tab. Leave at least 2-3/4 in between post and gate.
Does it need maintenance?
Grease it now and then through the grease fitting on each barrel. The bearing gives a smooth swing, and regular grease keeps it that way.
What is the finish?
Bare steel with a black finish. Prime and paint after welding to protect the welds and match the gate.
What is the minimum gap between post and gate?
The gap between post and gate frame must be at least 2-3/4 in for the J-bolt and barrel to fit.
