About

The LiftMaster CSW24UL is a continuous-duty 24V DC pad-mount swing gate opener for busy entrances: HOA and apartment gates, commercial sites and large estates. It swings one leaf up to 18 ft, or up to 1,600 lb on an 8 ft leaf, and keeps running on its included backup batteries when the power fails.

It ships with a monitored photo eye and two backup batteries. A double gate uses two operators that sync wirelessly.

Will it move my gate?

Swing capacity depends on leaf length: the longer the leaf, the lighter it must be. Many listings quote "18 ft and 1,600 lb" together; LiftMaster rates them separately.

Power, weather and smart control

Power outages

Up to 146 cycles or 24 days of standby on the included batteries; 876 cycles or 105 days with two 33Ah batteries. It can open the gate automatically on power loss for fire-department access.

Solar

Runs on 24V solar up to 60 W with the K94-37236 harness and two to six SP10W12V panels, about 16 cycles a day in a sunny zone on 10 W. Heaters can't run on solar, and LiftMaster doesn't recommend solar in northern climates.

Cold weather

Rated to −4°F; add the HTR heater kit for −40°F. Two 33Ah batteries won't fit alongside the heater.

myQ app control

Add the LiftMaster 828LM Internet Gateway for app control, alerts and scheduling. There's no built-in Wi-Fi.

Remotes and keypads

The Security+ 2.0 radio stores up to 50 remotes or KPW250 keypads plus 2 keyless entries; HomeLink 4.0 or newer. See the radio compatibility chart in Documents for older remotes.

Control and dual gates

Two-digit diagnostic display, timer-to-close, and wireless or wired dual-gate sync with bi-part delay.

The CSW24UL and HDSW24UL are continuous duty; the LA500 is rated 300 cycles a day with a 2-year warranty.

Installation

LiftMaster specifies installation by a trained gate technician: the job involves pouring a pad, welding the gate bracket and running AC power in conduit. Follow the installation manual exactly, as the warranty depends on it. The official manual, data sheet and dimensioned drawing are in Documents below.

Max gate figures in the comparison are each model's top rating, not always at full length. Ratings from LiftMaster's UL 325 operator chart.

Frequently asked questions

Can the CSW24UL handle an 18 ft, 1,600 lb gate?

Not both at once. LiftMaster rates 1,600 lb on an 8 ft leaf, 1,200 lb at 12 ft, 800 lb at 16 ft and 600 lb at 18 ft. The longer the leaf, the lighter it must be, so check your gate against that table before ordering.

Does one CSW24UL run a double gate?

No. One operator drives one leaf, and the manual says power must be connected to each operator on a dual gate. Two CSW24ULs link wirelessly, or with shielded twisted-pair wire. They support bi-part delay and synchronized close, with one unit set as primary.

What happens when the power goes out?

Two 7Ah batteries come in the box and give up to 146 cycles or 24 days of standby. Two optional 33Ah batteries raise that to 876 cycles or 105 days. The operator can be set to open the gate automatically on AC loss or battery depletion (fire-department compliance).

Can I open the gate by hand?

Yes. The manual disconnect is a release handle: press the reset switch to RESET/DISCONNECT, then release the handle so the gate moves freely. The product guide says the operator holds its limit positions after it is re-engaged. Use the release only when the gate is not moving.

Are remotes included?

No. The manual lists remote controls as not provided. The receiver holds up to 50 Security+ 2.0 remotes or KPW250 keypads plus 2 keyless-entry PINs. The data sheet says 811LM/813LM DIP remotes allow unlimited remotes.

Will my existing LiftMaster remotes work?

Security+ 2.0 remotes and keypads work, including the 893MAX, 890MAX, 892LT/894LT, KPW250 and 877LM/878MAX, as do 811LM/813LM DIP remotes. Older Billion Code and original Security+ remotes aren't supported directly, though a learning remote like the 892LT can often clone them. The radio compatibility chart is in Documents below.

Can I control it from my phone?

Yes, through myQ, but it needs extra hardware. The manual calls for the LiftMaster Internet Gateway 828LM (not provided), and the product guide notes that a cellular data or Wi-Fi connection is required. Communities can instead use LiftMaster's CAPXL cloud access portal.

Does it work with my car's HomeLink buttons?

Yes, with HomeLink version 4.0 or higher. Depending on the vehicle's make and year, an external compatibility adapter may be needed.

Can it run on solar?

Yes, up to 60 W at 24 Vdc. The minimum is two 10W SP10W12V panels in series and the maximum is six. You also need the K94-37236 solar harness, and 33Ah batteries need the K10-36183 tray. Panels are not provided, a heater cannot be used with solar, and LiftMaster says solar is not supported in northern climates.

How many cycles a day will it do on solar?

LiftMaster's feature chart gives about 16 cycles per day in Zone 1 with a 10 W panel and 6 hours of sun. Output depends on panel wattage, battery size, standby accessory draw and solar zone; the manual has a full table.

Will it work in very cold weather?

Standard range is -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C). The optional HTR heater extends this to -40°F. The heater runs on 110–250 Vac, and its thermostat must be set between 45°F and 60°F. Two 33Ah batteries will not fit in the enclosure with the heater installed.

What power does it need? Can I use 240 V or 3-phase?

It is wired for 120 Vac (4 A, or 10 A with the accessory outlets loaded) or 240 Vac (2 A). The accessory outlet is disabled on 240 V. For 208, 240, 480 or 575 Vac supplies, the optional 3PHCONV transformer kit converts to 120 Vac.

What does my gate need before installation?

The gate must be built to ASTM F2200 and be level and plumb, with a smooth bottom edge. It must swing freely and be carried entirely by its hinges. Remove any wheels, and make sure the gate does not drag on the ground.

Do I need a concrete pad, and is welding required?

Yes to the pad: pour a reinforced pad 6 in above grade, below the frost line and above any flood level. Post mounting with the MPEL plate is the alternative. The gate bracket is welded to the gate, and horizontal reinforcement may be needed.

Is it safe? What safety devices come with it?

It is UL 325 listed for Classes I–IV and has an inherent reversing sensor. One LMRRUL monitored photo eye is included. There are 6 monitored entrapment inputs (3 on the main board, 3 on the expansion board). UL 325 requires protection for every entrapment zone, so most sites need more eyes or edges.

Can I install it myself?

LiftMaster specifies installation and service by a trained gate systems technician, and the warranty depends on following the installation manual. The job involves a concrete pad, welding the gate bracket and running AC power in conduit. It's for vehicle gates only, not pedestrian gates.

What does the warranty cover?

7 years residential or 5 years commercial, limited. It excludes batteries, labor to reinstall, gate hardware problems, interference and improper installation. You call LiftMaster first, then ship the unit prepaid for repair.

CSW24UL vs CSW24U: what's the difference?

The CSW24U is the earlier 2016 UL 325 model; LiftMaster's radio chart lists the CSW24UL under 2018 UL 325-compliant operators. The CSW24UL ships with the LMRRUL monitored photo eye. The older CSW24VDC (2014) is discontinued.

CSW24UL or LA500: which should I choose?

Both top out at 1,600 lb and 18 ft. The CSW24UL is a continuous-duty pad-mount operator with a 7-year residential / 5-year commercial warranty, built for high-traffic entrances. The LA500 is a post-mounted linear actuator rated 300 cycles a day with a 2-year warranty and longer battery runtime (500 cycles vs 146). For HOA or commercial traffic, choose the CSW24UL.
