About

The LiftMaster 828LM Internet Gateway puts your gate on your phone. Plug it into your router, pair it in the free myQ app, and you can open and close the gate from anywhere, see whether it's open, get alerts and set schedules.

Current LiftMaster gate operators, including the CSL24UL, CSW24UL, RSL12UL and LA500UL we sell, are myQ-enabled but have no internet connection of their own; the 828LM is the piece their manuals call for.

What's in the box

  • 828LM Internet Gateway
  • Ethernet cable
  • Power adapter
  • User guide

What you'll still need

  • A router with a free Ethernet (LAN) port and a power outlet nearby
  • A broadband internet connection
  • The free myQ app on your phone
  • A myQ-enabled LiftMaster gate operator or opener within range, with its required photo eyes or edges installed

Range on long driveways

The gateway talks to the operator over myQ's own 902–928 MHz two-way radio, not over Wi-Fi. LiftMaster Support gives an average range of 300–600 ft; walls, hills and metal shorten it. LiftMaster doesn't offer an antenna for the 828LM, so on a long driveway put the router and gateway on the side of the house nearest the gate.

Safety with remote control

A LiftMaster UL 325 gate operator won't move until its required monitored photo eyes or edges are connected, and that applies to commands from the app as well.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 828LM connect to my router over Wi-Fi?

No. It plugs into a LAN port on your router with the included Ethernet cable and has no Wi-Fi of its own. A Wi-Fi router is fine, as long as the gateway is cabled to it.

Will it work with my CSL24UL, CSW24UL, RSL12UL or LA500UL?

Yes. These LiftMaster operators are myQ-enabled, and their product guides and manuals name the 828LM as the accessory that connects them to the myQ app.

How does the gateway talk to my gate?

Over myQ's two-way 902–928 MHz radio, so no wires run from the gateway to the gate and the app can show whether the gate is open or closed.

How far can the gateway be from my gate?

LiftMaster Support gives an average range of 300–600 ft. Walls, terrain and metal shorten it, and there's no antenna or extender for the 828LM, so place the router and gateway as close to the gate as you can.

How many gates and doors can one gateway run?

Up to 16 myQ devices, in any mix of gate operators, garage door openers, commercial door operators and myQ lights.

How do I set it up?

Plug the gateway into your router and power, and wait for a solid green light. In the myQ app, add it using the 10-character serial number on its bottom label. Then add the gate: with the gate closed, open it, and within 30 seconds press the operator's learn button twice or toggle its reset button three times.

Do I need a subscription?

No. Opening, closing and alerts are free in the myQ app. myQ's paid plan covers camera video storage and smart detection.

Does it work with Alexa or Google Assistant?

LiftMaster doesn't list voice-assistant support for the 828LM, and Chamberlain ended myQ's Google Assistant integration for new users in 2023. The product page does list Amazon Key for in-garage delivery.

Can I use a myQ Smart Garage Hub on my gate instead?

No. Chamberlain doesn't support its Wi-Fi garage hubs (such as the MYQ-G0301 and MYQ-G0401) on gate operators or commercial doors. Gates need the 828LM.

Will it work with my older gate operator?

Only if the operator is myQ-enabled (Security+ 2.0). Older LiftMaster operators with 312HM or 412HM receivers, or the 850LM radio, can't be added to myQ.

What do the lights mean?

Solid green: online. Flashing green: connected to the router but not the internet. Green off: no connection to the router, so check the cable and port. Blue: at least one device paired. Yellow: learn mode.

Is it safe to close the gate from the app?

The operator still enforces UL 325: a current LiftMaster gate operator won't move until its required monitored photo eyes or edges are connected, whether the command comes from a remote or the app.

What is the warranty?

A 1-year limited warranty from LiftMaster (Chamberlain Group), from the date of purchase.
