About
This kit automates a double swing gate with LiftMaster's most powerful linear actuator, the LA500. It pairs the LA500PKGUL (primary arm, control box, batteries and photo eye) with the LA500DCS secondary arm, which wires into the same control box.

Each leaf can be up to 18 ft, or up to 1,600 lb on an 8 ft leaf, and the gates keep working on the included backup batteries when the power fails.
Will it move my gates?
Capacity depends on leaf length: the longer the leaf, the lighter it must be. Each leaf must fit this chart.
| Leaf length | Max weight |
|---|---|
| 8 ft | 1,600 lb |
| 12 ft | 1,200 lb |
| 16 ft | 800 lb |
| 18 ft | 600 lb |
What's in the box

Power and smart control
Power outages
Up to 500 cycles or 24 days of standby on the included batteries. It can open the gates automatically on power loss for fire-department access.
Solar
Runs on 24V solar up to 60 W with the K94-37236 harness and at least two SP10W12V panels: about 22 dual-gate cycles a day on one 10 W panel in a sunny zone, or 48 on 20 W. 33Ah batteries need the XLSOLARCONTUL box. LiftMaster doesn't recommend solar in northern climates.
Wired vs wireless
The kit's single control box drives both arms over the extension cable, which also gives the longest battery standby. Wireless linking needs a second control box.
myQ app control
Add the LiftMaster 828LM Internet Gateway for app control, alerts and scheduling. There's no built-in Wi-Fi.
Remotes and keypads
The Security+ 2.0 radio stores up to 50 remotes or KPW250 keypads plus 2 keyless entries; HomeLink 4.0 or newer. An 811LMX receiver allows unlimited DIP-switch remotes.
Control
Two-digit diagnostic display, bi-part delay for overlapping leaves, and timer-to-close.
How it compares

Frequently asked questions
What's in this kit, exactly?
Two LiftMaster cartons: the LA500PKGUL (primary arm, control box, two 7Ah batteries, LMRRUL photo eye, brackets) and the LA500DCS (secondary arm, brackets, junction box and extension cable). Together they automate a double swing gate from one control box.
Does the LA500DCS secondary arm come with its own control box?
No. The LA500DCS ships with the arm, brackets, keys, a junction box, a terminal block and an extension cable. That cable runs under the driveway and plugs into the GATE 2 terminal on the LA500PKGUL's control board.
Can I skip trenching across the driveway?
Yes, with wireless dual-gate communication, but that needs two control boxes, one per arm. So you would add a second LA500CONTUL. LiftMaster notes that wired dual gates get longer battery standby time than wireless ones.
How heavy and how long can each gate leaf be?
The limit depends on leaf length: 1,600 lb at 8 ft, 1,200 lb at 12 ft, 800 lb at 16 ft and 600 lb at 18 ft. The maximum leaf length is 18 ft. Each leaf must fall within this chart.
What happens when the power goes out?
Two 12 V 7Ah batteries come in the standard control box. LiftMaster rates the backup at up to 500 cycles, or up to 24 days of standby. A fire-department-compliance setting can open the gate automatically when AC power is lost or the battery runs down.
Can it run on solar power?
Yes, it is solar-ready, but panels are not included. With the standard box and 7Ah batteries you need at least two SP10W12V 10 W panels and the K94-37236 harness. Using 33Ah batteries also requires the XLSOLARCONTUL metal box and a battery tray. LiftMaster does not support solar in northern climates and advises against photo-eye heaters on solar systems.
How many solar cycles per day can a dual gate get?
LiftMaster's estimates for a dual gate in Zone 1 with 7Ah batteries at a 5 mA standby draw are about 22 cycles/day on one 10 W panel and 48 on 20 W. Real results depend on location, accessories and temperature.
Are remote controls included?
No. LiftMaster lists remote controls as not provided. The receiver holds up to 50 Security+ 2.0 remotes or KPW250 keypads plus 2 keyless-entry PINs.
Will my existing remotes work?
The operator has a Security+ 2.0 receiver. LiftMaster lists the 893MAX and 890MAX remotes, the 892LT/894LT learning remotes (which also do Security+) and the 877MAX keyless entry as compatible. For more than 50 users, the 811LMX/813LMX external receivers allow unlimited remotes.
Can I open the gate from my phone?
Yes, through the myQ app, but you need the LiftMaster 828LM Internet Gateway, which is sold separately. The 828LM connects to your router by Ethernet cable.
Does it work with my car's HomeLink buttons?
Yes, with HomeLink version 4.0 or higher. Depending on your vehicle's make and year, an external adapter may be needed.
Are photo eyes required, and is one enough?
To comply with UL 325, monitored external entrapment protection (photo eyes or edges) must be installed at every entrapment zone. One LMRRUL comes in the package. Sites with more zones, such as both the open and close directions on a dual gate, need more photo eyes or edges.
Will it work in very cold weather?
LiftMaster's current data sheet rates it −4°F to 140°F (an older manual says −40°F). Plan on −4°F as the limit, and use larger batteries where winters are cold. LiftMaster doesn't support solar in northern climates.
Can my gates swing outward (push-to-open)?
Yes. The manual gives push-to-open bracket dimensions, and LiftMaster sells a separate push-to-open bracket, model 50-19503.
What must my gate be like before installing?
The gate must be level, with plumb posts and a smooth bottom edge. It must have no wheels and must not drag, and it must swing freely on its hinges alone. It should be built to ASTM F2200.
How far can the control box be from my power source?
At 120 VAC the maximum run is 350 ft on 14 AWG, 525 ft on 12 AWG and 850 ft on 10 AWG. At 240 VAC it is 1,150, 1,850 and 2,950 ft. Use copper conductors only, and run power and control wiring in separate conduits.
What does the warranty cover?
The warranty is 2 years against defects in materials and workmanship, as long as the installation and maintenance instructions were followed. It does not cover batteries, labor to reinstall, gate hardware (hinges, springs, rollers, alignment) or interference problems.
LA500 or LA400: which do I need?
The LA400PKGUL is rated to 850 lb / 16 ft at 100 cycles/day, with 400 backup cycles and up to 97 days standby. The LA500PKGUL is rated to 1,600 lb / 18 ft at 300 cycles/day, with 500 backup cycles and up to 24 days standby. Choose the LA500 for heavier or longer leaves or busier gates.
LA500 or CSW24UL?
Both carry a 1,600 lb / 18 ft headline rating. The CSW24UL is a commercial swing operator rated for continuous duty with a 7-year residential / 5-year commercial warranty, against the LA500's 2 years. The CSW24UL's battery backup is 146 cycles, against 500 for the LA500.
Which side should the control box go on for a dual gate?
Either side works. The leaf that must open first and close last, for example one with an overlap or a lock, connects to GATE 1, and a bi-part delay setting controls the timing. LiftMaster prefers mounting the box on that leaf's side.
