Driveway gate size calculator
Enter the opening between your posts and get the exact gate width, leaf widths, swing arc and slide run-back — the numbers a gate is actually built to.
Your 12′ × 6′ double swing gate
- Overall gate width
- 11′ 4″
- 136 in (11′ 4″)
- Each of 2 leaves
- 5′ 7½″
- 67½ in (5′ 7½″)
- Space to swing open
- 5′ 7½″
- Each leaf sweeps a quarter circle this deep inside the posts.
A swing gate is narrower than the opening: we leave 4″ at each hinge post and 1″ at the latch (or between two leaves) so it clears the posts.

How this calculator works
Measure the drivable opening between the inside faces of the two posts. A swing gate is built narrower than that so it clears the posts: GateFrames leaves 4 inches at each hinge post and 1 inch at the latch post, or between the two leaves of a double gate.
A slide gate is built wider than the opening so it overlaps the posts it closes against. The numbers on this page come straight from the build calculations our configurator uses for every gate it prices.
