Gate opener calculator

Match a gate opener to your gate’s leaf length, weight and use. Checks manufacturer ratings and UL 325 usage class, then lists the openers that fit.

Openers rated for this gate

Ratings are the manufacturers’ published maximums, checked 2026-10-02. A rating is a ceiling for a gate that swings or rolls freely — wind load, a sticky hinge or a slope all eat into it, so leave headroom.

Every automated gate also needs

  • UL 325 requires at least two independent entrapment-protection means for each entrapment zone, in both directions of travel on a slide gate; external devices such as photo-eyes and safety edges must be monitored by the opener. Source
  • ASTM F2200: an automated slide gate must stop a 2¼-inch sphere passing through it from the bottom to the top of the gate, or to 6 ft above grade, whichever is less — including the fence it covers when open. Source
  • ASTM F2200: an automated swing gate needs at least 16 inches to any fixed object it opens toward; closer than that, entrapment protection is required in that zone. Source

How this calculator works

An opener is rated for a maximum leaf weight and length. On a swing gate the two trade off — a longer leaf is a longer lever — so manufacturers publish lower weight limits for longer leaves. This calculator checks your leaf against the rating at its actual length.

If you leave the weight blank, it uses the weight of the steel gate we would build for your opening, from its real materials. UL 325 usage classes decide which openers may be installed where: a home is Class I; apartments, hotels and shops open to the public are Class II.
