About
The LiftMaster RSL12UL is a 12V DC pad-mount slide gate opener for homes, farms and small communities, moving gates up to 800 lb or 25 ft. It keeps working on its included backup battery when the power fails, and ships with the two monitored safety devices it needs to operate.

Power, weather and smart control
Power outages
Up to 114 cycles or 63 days of standby on the included battery. When it runs critically low, you choose: the gate opens and stays open (fire-department access), or stays closed until power returns.
Solar
Runs on one to three 10 W 12V panels with the K94-37236 harness, about 33 cycles a day in a sunny zone on a single 10 W panel. Panels aren't included, and the heater can't run on solar.
Cold weather
Rated to −4°F; add the AC-powered HTR heater for −40°F. For solar sites that stay below freezing for weeks, use the 33Ah battery.
myQ app control
Add the LiftMaster 828LM Internet Gateway for app control, alerts and scheduling. There's no built-in Wi-Fi.
Remotes and keypads
The Security+ 2.0 radio stores up to 50 remotes or KPW250 keypads plus 2 keyless entries; HomeLink 4.0 or newer. DIP-switch remotes work through an 811LMX receiver.
Dual gates and security
Wireless dual-gate sync for bi-parting gates, a lockable manual release, and Posilock to hold the gate closed.
How it compares
| Operator | Max gate | On battery |
|---|---|---|
| RSL12UL | 800 lb / 25 ft | 114 cycles |
| CSL24UL | 1,500 lb / 50 ft | 208 cycles |
| SL-45 DC PRO | 800 lb / 30 ft | 250 cycles* |
| SL3000UL (AC) | 2,000 lb / 50 ft | None |
The RSL12UL is rated 120 cycles a day; the CSL24UL and SL3000UL are continuous duty for busier gates.
Installation
LiftMaster specifies installation by a trained gate technician: the job involves pouring a pad, welding chain brackets and running power in conduit. The official manual, data sheet and dimensioned drawing are in Documents below.

Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum gate size for the RSL12UL?
Up to 800 lb or 25 ft long, per LiftMaster's data sheet, product guide and UL 325 operator chart. Some listings quote 16 ft / 500 lb, which isn't this model's rating.
Does it come with safety sensors?
Yes. Current units ship with an LMRRUL monitored retro-reflective photo eye and a 5 ft monitored resistive edge kit (S505AL). The operator also has a built-in inherent reversing sensor. The installer is still responsible for covering every entrapment zone, so some sites need more devices.
Will the gate work without the photo eye or edge connected?
No. The operator only runs once at least two independent monitored entrapment devices are installed in each direction. The built-in inherent sensor counts as one of the two. The inputs accept LiftMaster monitored devices only.
Are batteries included, and how long does it run in a power outage?
One 12V 7Ah battery is included. LiftMaster rates battery backup at about 114 cycles, or up to 63 days of standby. You can swap in one 33Ah battery (A12330SGLPK) with the K94-37236 harness for longer backup. The warranty does not cover battery replacement, and LiftMaster recommends replacing batteries about every 3 years.
What happens when the battery runs flat during an outage?
Below 11.5 V the battery counts as critically low. A switch then makes the gate either open automatically and stay open (fire-department compliant) or latch closed until power returns. With both AC and battery gone, the BACKDRIVE switch decides whether the gate can be pushed by hand (MANUAL) or resists being pushed (SECURE).
Can it run on solar?
Yes. It's solar-ready, but panels aren't included. Use one to three 10 W 12V panels in parallel with the K94-37236 harness; in a sunny zone one 10 W panel gives about 33 cycles a day. If you also run myQ on solar, LiftMaster recommends at least 40 W of panels and a 33Ah battery.
Can I use the heated photo eye or the operator heater with solar?
No. The HTR heater cannot be used on a solar install, and LiftMaster does not recommend the LMRRUL/LMTBUL photo-eye heater option for solar because it drains the batteries. Heater use also shortens battery standby time and backup cycles.
How cold can it operate?
It is rated from -4°F to 140°F without a heater, and down to -40°F with the optional HTR heater, which is AC-powered. For solar installs where temperatures stay below freezing for more than two weeks, LiftMaster recommends a 33Ah battery instead of the 7Ah.
Will my existing remotes work?
The on-board receiver is Security+ 2.0. The radio chart lists RSL12UL as compatible with Security+ 2.0 remotes and with DIP-switch codes through the 811LMX/813LMX. Older Billion Code or original Security+ remotes are not listed for this operator's on-board receiver. The 892LT/894LT learning remotes and 893MAX cover the most formats.
How many remotes can I program?
Up to 50 Security+ 2.0 remotes or KPW250 keypads, plus 2 keyless-entry PINs. The data sheet says remote capacity is unlimited when using 811LMX/813LMX DIP-style remotes.
Can I open the gate from my phone?
Yes, through myQ, but it needs a LiftMaster 828LM Internet Gateway (not included) connected to your router by Ethernet. The product guide notes that myQ needs a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection on the phone side.
Does it work with my car's HomeLink buttons?
Yes, with HomeLink version 4.0 or newer. Some vehicles may need an external adapter depending on model and year.
Can I automate a dual (bi-parting) slide gate?
Yes. Two operators can sync wirelessly, so no trench across the driveway is needed. Each operator still needs its own power. Wired dual-gate setups get longer battery standby than wireless ones.
Does it need a concrete pad, or can it post-mount?
The manual covers pad mounting only: pour a reinforced concrete pad and anchor the operator near the gate's front roller (or near the back of the gate for rear mounting). The mounting footprint is 20-3/8 in. An optional MSLM stand raises the operator for snow areas.
Can I install it myself?
LiftMaster states the product is to be installed and serviced by a trained gate systems technician only. It is for vehicular gates only, and the gate must meet ASTM F2200 (guarded rollers, screened openings, positive stops).
What does the warranty cover?
A 3-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the first purchaser. It excludes batteries, gate hardware problems, improper installation or maintenance, and reinstallation labor. Warranty repairs are done by returning the unit prepaid to LiftMaster's service center.
Can I open the gate by hand?
Yes. A lockable manual disconnect lets you push the gate by hand when it is unlocked. Posilock powers the operator to drive the gate back closed if someone pushes it off the closed limit.
RSL12UL or CSL24UL: which should I buy?
The RSL12UL (12VDC) is rated 800 lb / 25 ft, 120 cycles/day, 114 battery cycles and a 3-year warranty. The CSL24UL (24VDC) is rated 1,500 lb / 50 ft, continuous duty, 208 battery cycles, and a 7-year residential / 5-year commercial warranty. Choose the CSL24UL for heavier or longer gates, or high-traffic sites.
