Questions & Answers

How do I measure my driveway for the right gate width?

Measure the drivable opening: the clear gap between the inside faces of your two gate posts (or where the posts will go). Enter that number as Driveway Width. We size the steel frame from it automatically: a swing gate is built slightly narrower to leave hinge and latch clearance, and a slide gate is built wider so it covers the posts. Widths from 3 ft to 24 ft and heights from 3 ft to 8 ft are available.

Should I choose a swing gate or a slide gate?

Swing gates suit driveways with level ground and room for the leaves to open inward. Slide gates suit sloped driveways, short setbacks, or tight spaces, and they're the usual choice for automation on wide openings. Slide and center-opening swing gates go up to 24 ft wide; side-opening swing gates up to 14 ft 8 in. With ironwood, each swing panel is at most 10 ft (a 20 ft 9 in center swing or a 10 ft 5 in side swing); slide gates take ironwood at any width. A long, heavy side swing can be a little less, so it sags under 1/2 in at the latch; the configurator checks yours.

What is the difference between Center and Side opening?

Center opening splits the gate into two leaves that meet in the middle (a double gate). Side opening is one single leaf that opens from one post. Center is the better fit for wide swing gates because each leaf is shorter and lighter; Side keeps a clean single-panel look and needs only one operator when automated.

What do the Arch and Finials add-ons look like?

Arch adds a 12-inch rise across the top rail, highest at the middle of the gate. Finials add spear-point caps on top of every full-height picket. You can choose either one, both together, or neither for a flat square top. The 3D preview updates as you toggle them.

Can I automate this gate with an electric opener?

Yes. Every gate is automation-ready, and we also sell slide and swing gate operators. Slide gates that will be automated must meet the UL 325 opening-size rule, so single or puppy pickets on a slide gate require face-mounted Ironwood boards; the configurator prevents a non-compliant combination automatically.

What materials and finish are used?

2-inch American steel tube frames with satin powder coat over anti-gassing primer, black or white. Posts: 0.120-inch or heavy-duty 3/16-inch wall. Vertical or horizontal Ironwood boards mount to the face/back with self-tapping screws; our steel frame is thick enough for the screws to thread into. Wood is not fitted between frame members. Do It Yourself includes internal frame members and no boards. For your own boards, confirm thickness and fastener specifications with our team.

How long does it take to build and ship my gate?

Each gate is handmade to order in San Jose, California. Production takes about 14 days, then LTL freight typically takes 3–5 business days to anywhere in the US, including Alaska and Hawaii. Local customers can also pick up at our San Jose shop (will-call). Your estimated ship date is shown before checkout. Wider gates ship in bolt-together sections no longer than 94 in, so every gate fits a standard crate; you bolt the sections together on site. If you prefer a panel up to 10 ft in one piece, choose One-piece panels (it ships in an oversize crate).

Can I install the gate myself?

Yes. Every gate ships DIY-ready with large cane bolts and/or a gate latch depending on the configuration, and our free Swing Gate and Slide Gate Install Guides (PDF, under Documents on this page) walk through posts, hanging, and adjustment. Many homeowners install with a helper; for automation wiring, a licensed gate installer is recommended.

Can I order a custom color, size, or design?

Yes. Add your gate to the cart and describe what you need in the cart's Optional section, such as a custom powder-coat color, a matching pedestrian gate, or a design change. You can also tap Ask a Gate Expert. We'll review it and confirm the price and details with you before your order is built.

What warranty and return policy come with the gate?

The gate carries a lifetime limited structural warranty. Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery (a 25% restocking fee applies), and any freight damage must be noted on the delivery receipt and reported to us within 48 hours so we can make it right quickly.

Do you sell matching fence panels?

Yes. The GateFrames Luxury Fence Panel is built exactly like this gate, from the same 2 in steel frame, pickets, ironwood and powder coat, with no opening, so the panel runs post to post. Choose the same style as your gate, any width from 2 to 24 ft, and None, 1 Post or 2 Posts (4 x 4 inch steel). Ordered together, the gate and fence ship in the same crate.

What's included with the gate?

Every gate ships with its hinges and posts. Manual swing gates also include an 18 in cane bolt (it holds the second leaf of a center gate, or a side swing gate open at 180 degrees), and a center swing adds a key-lockable LokkLatch gate latch where its leaves meet; center slide gates include the cane bolt, plus the V-track, wheels, stops and guide rollers. Each included item is listed under the price with a link to its own page.

Can I add a gate opener?

Yes. Set Access to Automatic and choose an operator brand. We pick the opener model rated for your gate's leaf length and weight, add it at its regular price, and ship it free inside the gate's crate. The latch and cane bolt come off, and their price is credited, because the opener holds and locks the gate.

Which gate opener should I choose?

For swing gates, Nice is the best value: 12V DC, solar-ready, with battery backup. LiftMaster adds myQ app control from your phone and a nationwide service network. For slide gates, LiftMaster is the default; All-O-Matic's heavy-duty DC operators with battery backup suit long, heavy gates. Nice makes no slide opener we carry.

Off-the-shelf gates come in a handful of widths, so you end up adjusting your posts to fit the gate. A GateFrames gate is the other way around: you enter your opening, and we build the steel frame to it, with the clearances already worked out. It blends metal and wood styling into a clean, custom look for entries where strength, outdoor durability and craftsmanship matter.

Swing gates need level ground and room for the leaves to open inward; center opening keeps each leaf shorter and lighter on wide drives. Slide gates suit sloped driveways, short setbacks and tight spaces, and they're the usual choice for automating a wide opening. A side-opening gate needs only one operator when automated.

*Swing panels are at most 14 ft 3 in each on our hinge hardware, and 10 ft each with ironwood: up to a 20 ft 9 in opening on a center swing or 10 ft 5 in on a side swing. We also keep every swing gate's sag under 1/2 in at the latch on our heavy 3/16 in hinge post, which can trim a long, heavy side swing (about 13 ft 9 in at 6 ft with puppy pickets); the configurator checks your exact gate and offers the fix. Slide gates have no sag limit and take ironwood at every width. Gates up to 6 ft tall ship in bolt-together sections that fit a standard 94 in crate; taller gates ship in a longer crate that fits their posts.
