About
This kit automates a double swing gate with Nice's heaviest-duty residential arms: the PRO-SW4000XLS master arm and control box, plus the PRO-SW4200XLS second arm on a 50 ft cable. Both arms run from a 12V battery that keeps the gates working through power outages.

Sold under Nice's Linear Pro Access line (formerly GTO/PRO). Each leaf can be 6 to 20 ft long and up to 1,000 lb.
Will it fit my gates?
- Each leaf: 20 ft and 1,000 lb, both limits at once, and at least 6 ft long. That's per leaf, not a 2,000 lb total.
- Posts: flat, at least 6 in square, set in concrete. Wood posts need a metal backing plate; masonry needs anchors.
- Swing: set up to pull open (into the property). Gates that swing out need two R4KPTO push-to-open brackets.
- Gate type: built for vinyl, aluminum, chain link, farm tube and wrought iron.
- Solid wood privacy gates: Nice advises against them, because wind load can stop the arms.
- HOA, apartment or commercial entrances: Nice rates it for single-family residential gates. Choose a continuous-duty commercial operator such as the LiftMaster CSW24UL.
What's in the box
- PRO-SW4000XLS: master arm, control box with battery box, 12V 7Ah battery, 18 VAC plug-in transformer, 318 MHz receiver, one remote, post and gate brackets, closed-position stop plate, hardware, warning signs
- PRO-SW4200XLS: second arm with 50 ft power cable, post and gate brackets, stop plate, hardware, warning signs
What you'll still need
- 16 AWG direct-burial low-voltage wire from the transformer to the control box (up to 1,000 ft), and conduit for the cables
- Photo beams (R4222) or edges wherever the gates create an entrapment zone
- A surge protector, plus a weatherproof cover if the transformer plugs into an outdoor outlet
- Grounding kit and an 8 ft ground rod
- A separate pedestrian entrance
- Optional: FM123 solar panel, second RB500 battery, extra remotes, keypad, exit wand, automatic gate lock
Power, weather and control
Always on battery
The arms run from the 12V battery; the transformer only keeps it charged. When the power fails, the gates keep working until the battery runs down.
Solar
No AC outlet within 1,000 ft? Use a panel of at least 10 W instead of the transformer, never both. Nice's winter chart for a dual gate shows 4 to 13 cycles a day on 10 W, or 16 to 41 on 30 W, depending on your sun zone. A second battery helps.
Cold weather
Rated −5°F to 160°F. Nice's battery heater (FM316) helps in extreme cold but can't run on solar.
Remotes
One remote is included. The 318 MHz receiver learns GTO/Nice digital remotes: the RB741, RB742 and RB743.
Daily duty
Up to 100 cycles a day on AC at the maximum leaf size, 150 on leaves of 10 ft or less, swinging up to 110°. Auto-close from 3 to 120 s.
Opening by hand
Turn the control box power switch off, then remove the hairpin clip, clevis pin and bushing at the mounts and lift the arm off. Unplugging the transformer doesn't stop the operator, because it runs on battery.
How it compares
| Kit | Max leaf | Voltage |
|---|---|---|
| 4000XLS dual | 1,000 lb / 20 ft | 12V DC |
| 3000XLS dual | 650 lb / 16 ft | 12V DC |
| LA500 dual | 1,600 lb / 18 ft | 24V DC |
| TORO24 | 1,600 lb / 18 ft | 24V DC |
The 24V arms, LiftMaster's LA500 dual and All-O-Matic's TORO24, carry heavier short leaves (1,600 lb only at 8 ft, 600 lb at 18 ft); the PRO-SW4000XLS holds 1,000 lb all the way to 20 ft. The 3000XLS kit uses a 40 ft second-arm cable.
Installation
Many owners install this kit themselves: it runs on low voltage from a plug-in transformer, so no high-voltage wiring is needed at the gate. Follow the dual-gate manual in Documents below, and keep controls at least 10 ft from the moving gate. The kit ships in two cartons, about 87 lb together.

Frequently asked questions
Do I get everything for two gates?
Yes. This kit is both Nice SKUs: the PRO-SW4000XLS (master arm, control box, battery, transformer, receiver and remote) and the PRO-SW4200XLS second arm, which plugs into the same control box over its 50 ft cable. On its own, the PRO-SW4200XLS can't run a gate.
What size gates will it handle?
Up to 20 ft long and up to 1,000 lb per leaf, so a dual pair can cover up to a 40 ft opening. Both limits apply together: the manual says the gate must not exceed 20 ft nor weigh more than 1,000 lb. Minimum gate length is 6 ft.
Is a battery included?
Yes, one 12 V 7 Ah sealed rechargeable battery comes with the PRO-SW4000XLS and runs both arms. The PRO-SW4200XLS carton has no battery. A second battery (RB500) can be added through the second-battery connectors in the battery box.
What happens when the power goes out?
The motor always runs from the 12 V battery; the 18 VAC transformer only keeps it charged. So the gate keeps working on battery during an outage until the charge runs down. Nice publishes no outage cycle count or standby-days figure for this model.
Is a solar panel included? Can it run on solar?
No panel is included, but it is solar-compatible. You need at least 10 W of panel (FM123); the manual calls for solar if the gate is more than 1,000 ft from AC power. Never connect the transformer and a solar panel at the same time: it damages the control board.
How many cycles a day can I get on solar with two gates?
The dual manual's winter chart shows 4, 8 or 13 cycles a day with 10 W in zones 1, 2 and 3. With 30 W it shows 16, 28 or 41. A second battery (RB500) improves this, and accessories draw extra power.
Does it come with a remote?
The PRO-SW4000XLS includes one GTO transmitter and a 318 MHz receiver. Extra remotes are RB741 (1-button), RB742 (2-button) and RB743 (3-button). The receiver auto-learns digital transmitter codes.
Will my Mighty Mule or GTO remotes work?
The receiver is 318 MHz and learns GTO/Nice digital remotes, including the RB741, RB742 and RB743. Other brands aren't supported, and there's no Wi-Fi or app module for this model.
Do I need photo eyes or safety edges?
The manual lists photo beams (R4222) and contact edges as 'recommended, not included'. DASMA's UL 325 guidance says post-2016 swing operators need two means of entrapment protection in each direction that has an entrapment zone. The operator's built-in sensing counts as only one of the two. Plan on at least one external sensor where an entrapment zone exists, and check local code.
My gates open outward (away from the property). Will it work?
Out of the box it is set up for pull-to-open (the gate opens into the property). Push-to-open needs the R4KPTO bracket, and Nice says to order two for a dual gate. The control board DIP switches are then set for push-to-open.
What posts do I need?
Flat posts at least 6 in square, set in concrete. Posts over 8 in need longer bolts than those supplied, and wood posts need a metal backing plate. Masonry columns need anchors, which are not included.
Can I use it on solid wood privacy gates?
The manual says use on solid (wood) gates is not recommended. Wind load can make the operator obstruct, stop and blow fuses. It is intended for vinyl, aluminum, chain link, farm tube and wrought iron gates.
How far can the control box be from the outlet?
Up to 1,000 ft of 16-gauge, dual-conductor, stranded direct-burial wire (RB509), which is not included. The transformer is indoor-rated and needs a weatherproof cover if plugged in outdoors.
Will it work in cold weather?
It is rated -5 °F to +160 °F. The manual recommends the GTO battery heater FM316 in extreme cold, but the heater is not compatible with solar.
How do I open the gate by hand?
Turn the control box power switch OFF, then remove the hairpin clip, clevis pin and bushing at the front and rear mounts and lift the arm off. Unplugging the transformer does not turn the operator off, because it runs on battery.
What is the warranty?
24 months from purchase, with proof of purchase, under the GTO DC Series limited warranty. It is void for purchases from unauthorized online sellers, for non-GTO batteries or transformers, and for surge or lightning damage. Removal and reinstallation labor is not covered.
4000XLS or 3000XLS?
The PRO-SW3000XLS / 3200XLS pair is rated 16 ft and 650 lb per leaf and uses a 40 ft second-arm cable. The PRO-SW4000XLS / 4200XLS is rated 20 ft and 1,000 lb per leaf with a 50 ft cable. Both run on 12 VDC with the same battery and transformer.
Can it be used for a business or HOA gate?
Nice rates it for single-family residential swing gates. For an HOA, apartment or commercial entrance, choose a continuous-duty commercial operator such as the LiftMaster CSW24UL.
